This painting was inspired by an encounter I had with a black bear that I woke up while cross country skiing near his den. Both the bear and I got away safe!

are incredibly friendly and will take food from your fingers at first
meeting. This painting is from an actual encounter with one of these
amazing, friendly reptiles. It's shell was almost 10" in length.

This is a carefully rendered study in watercolor and gouache ... the mediums that I consider perfect for capturing light and texture. These magnificent owls are hard to spot in the wild as they blend in so well with their surroundings. I am amazed when a great Grey Owl has flown right past me ... how silent the flight is! I felt the air disturbed by it's wings but did not hear any noise at all.

Sometimes I can hear owls calling to each other in the darkness of the night from my studio in northern California. What a beautiful, soft sound!

Gouache and watercolor was ideal for capturing the rough texture of the bark and the softness of the owl's feathers in the moonlight. I do lot of hiking by moonlight and often stop to study what may be around me in the shadows. I'm often surprised, and I have see many owls both in Vermont and in California. In my lifetime I have had over 8 personal encounters with great Snowy Owls some of which were only six feet from me and the owls were totally unafraid of my presence! This is an experience that everyone should have at least once in their lifetime!
