What is gouache?
Gouache, (pronounced gwásh) is a simple watercolor paint that uses opaque pigments rather than the usual transparent watercolor pigments. Gouache colors are produced by adding zinc white to the same pigments used in regular watercolor paint. Although gouache is opaque and lacks the transparency of regular (aquarelle) watercolor, it possesses a compensating substance and body approaching that of oil paint. Many artists like the beautiful velvet matte finish which makes possible a wide range of pastel-like effects. Many of Wilson's gouache paintings are often mistaken for pastels.
Gouache was first employed by the ancient Egyptians, who used honey to bind their pigments. Gouache was widely used in the Middle Ages for illuminated manuscripts, and it became particularly popular in the 18th century. Museums are filled with many fine examples of gouache painting. Gouache continues to be widely used in the 20th century by artists who find its opacity ideal for delineating sharp focus effects and for creating rich textures.
In addition to using professional gouache paints, artist Frank S. Wilson prepares many of his own gouache paints. He begins by carefully selecting and blending earth tone pigments, umber's, ocher's and iron oxides. Then a thorough grinding of the pigments in a mixture of Gum Arabic and distilled water. The finished paint is then stored in jars.
